Finding meaning in music – LMM research launch
This month London Music Masters launched a new report assessing the impact that community engagement has on professional musicians. The report is based on a year-long research project from RCM Centre for Performance Science commissioned by London Music Masters. It is based on in-depth interviews with professional musicians who participated in LMM Learning events in 2015.
The report brings to light the immense value to professional musicians of community engagement, not only as a platform for prolific skill development but also for restoring meaning to the experience of music-making. Far more than the so called ‘feel good factor’, this report reveals how community engagement feeds into aspects of identity and psychological wellbeing of musicians. Importantly it highlights the impact that workshop participants, who are often considered to be the only beneficiaries, can have on professional musicians when they work together.
The report was launched on 18 October and included a presentation by lead researcher Sara Ascenso, a short film featuring some of the musicians who participated and a discussion on the findings.
